Celebrate Fermilab 50th Anniversary

On Saturday September 23rd SHPE-Fermilab and SHPE-Chicago invite you to this closed out open house

The country’s premier particle physics and accelerator laboratory is celebrating by having the biggest Open House in our history.

We’re opening our doors wider than ever before, offering behind-the-scenes tours of more than a dozen areas where scientists are uncovering the mysteries of neutrinos, searching for dark matter and building the next generation of particle accelerators for science world.

20,000 people have already registered to be a part of this history in the making event!

We welcome SHPE Members to be a part of our excitement!

50th Anniversary Open House Video

This open house is family friendly and is open to all ages.
Registration is now closed to the public, but paid SHPE Members will be allowed entrance and will be offered FREE bus rides from our Chicago UIC and IIT Campuses to Fermilabs in Warrenville and back.

Space is VERY limited and is on a first come, first serve basis until buses are full.

Interact with scientists at the CERN lab in Geneva,at a telescope on a mountaintop in Chile.

See giant magnets and learn how superconducting cables are manufactured.

See Fermilab’s accelerator chain where accelerator operators work 24 hours a day to keep the lab’s particle beams running at close to the speed of light.

See the most advanced X-ray laser facility in the world now under construction in California and it’s cutting-edge superconducting proton accelerator planned to be built at Fermilab.

The particle accelerator propels electrons to 99 percent of the speed of light at an energy equivalent to 300 million volts.

Come see the 50-foot-diameter electromagnet.

See accelerator magnets and instrumentation, learn how particle accelerators work in an underground concrete tunnel.

See our newest neutrino detector.

Visit the Fermilab Art Gallery to view the artwork of Angela Gonzales Fermilab’s first artist.

Children and families visiting the Lederman Science Center will engage in a variety of hands-on physics and nature activities both inside the building and on the grounds of the center.

A Cryogenic show that will demonstrate the very cool effects of liquid nitrogen.

Come visit the bison herd and meet Fermilab’s bison expert.
