Fernando Sanchez

Board Member, SHPE Chicago Professional Chapter
Product Management Specialist | Mechanical Engineer | STEM Advocate

Born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago, Fernando Sanchez has always had a passion for building and problem-solving—from early days with LEGO sets to earning his degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). Over the years, he has applied that same curiosity and creativity in roles ranging from application engineering in HVAC and industrial systems to his current position as a product management specialist.

Fernando’s SHPE journey began in 2015, inspired by a mentor during his freshman year who encouraged him to get involved. What started as a student experience quickly grew into a commitment to building community, maximizing opportunity, and giving back.

On the SHPE Chicago board, Fernando is focused on expanding the chapter’s impact across Chicagoland—especially by strengthening the pipeline from K–12 to university to career. He’s passionate about creating sustainable support systems, mentorship networks, and resources that empower the next generation of Latinx talent in STEM.

Outside of SHPE, Fernando enjoys playing in a men’s recreational soccer league, coaching robotics at his nephew’s school, and—of course—building LEGO sets. He’s also an avid traveler and loves exploring new cuisines wherever he goes.
