Volunteer opportunity with Citizen Schools
Citizen Schools is an expanded learning time partnership with low-performing middle schools, which involves extending the day by three hours, enrolling all the students in the program, and bringing in a “second shift” of young educators and volunteers to deliver an intensive academic support and provide hands-on learning projects with volunteer professionals. Citizen Schools is seeking volunteers and/or teams of volunteers to work with groups of 15-18 students on a variety of topics, including engineering, at the Cesar Chavez Multicultural Academic Center (Back of the Yards) and Walsh Elementary (Pilsen) weekly on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays from about 4:00pm to 5:30pm as part of an expanded day for the schools’ 6th-8th grade students. This opportunity lasts for about 10 weeks, from the beginning of September through mid-December (with a break in October due to the Track E October break). First time volunteers without classroom experience are encouraged to teach our pre-written curricula, but may also develop their own curriculum in collaboration with our staff. Volunteers will be partnered with a member of our team, who works all day in the school to teach the classes.
